The Turpan Depression,which covers an area of 4,050 square kilometers,accounts for 8.1 percent of the total area of the Turpan Basin. The area in the depression,which is 100 meters below sea level covers about 2,085 square kilometers which is around 4.1 percent of the total area of the basin.

The particular topography of the Turpan Depression exerts a tremendous injluence on the unique local clfmate,which differs greatly between that of the central part of the depression and the surrounding mountainous areas. What is referred to ‘the Turpen climate’is represented by that of the centual area of the depression whose highest absolute temperature reaches 47 degrees Celsius and above. That areahas more than 100 days each year in which the highest temperature is above 35 degrees Celsius and 35 degrees Celsius and 35 to 50 days of swelteringheat when the temperature is abve 40 degrees Celsius days of sweltering heat when the temperature is above 40 degrees Celsius with ground temperature in reaching as high as 70 degrees Celsius. The local topoguaphy is also responsible for the strong winds which blow frequently in the spring and summer,esqecially in the months between April and july.
