Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region covers an area of 1,660,000 square kilometers with the population of 24.86 million. It takes up one sixth of China’s total area, making it the largest of China’s regions and provinces.

The local population is composed of many ethnic groups, among which are thirteen ethnic groups with a comparatively large population, namely, the Uygur, Han, Kazakh, Mongolian, Hui, Kirgis, Tajik, Xibo, Uzbek, Manchurian, Daur, Tatar and Russian.
