Urumqi

Urumqi, commonly known as U City, is the capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It is located in the northwest of China, in the central part of Xinjiang, in the heart of the Eurasian continent, at the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains, and in the southern part of the Junggar Basin.

As of 2018, it has a total area of 14,216.3 square kilometers and a permanent population of 3.5058 million. In the early Western Han Dynasty, a military camp was established near Urumqi for farming; during the Tang Dynasty, a prefecture was set up at the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains; during the Qing Dynasty, it was renamed Dihua in 1763; in 1884, Dihua became the capital of Xinjiang Province, thus becoming the political center of the entire region; in 1954, Dihua was renamed "Urumqi," which means "beautiful pastures" in Mongolian. Urumqi is an important tourist destination in Xinjiang and even in the whole country. The Tianshan Mountain range features high mountain snow landscapes, mountain forest landscapes, and grassland landscapes. The Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar and other scenic spots rich in Xinjiang folk customs are renowned both domestically and internationally. The Silk Road ice and snow tourism has become a unique urban card for Urumqi.
