The Mosuo Folk Museum is located in Luoshui Village, Ninglang Yi Autonomous County, Lijiang, Yunnan. It was co-founded by local villager Weng Jici Erqing and his friend Ru Heng Ciren Duoji, and is the only museum in China that reflects the folk customs of a matriarchal clan society. As the only existing matriarchal clan society in the world, the Mosuo people still maintain the walking marriage system, where men do not marry and women do not marry. The Mosuo people respect nature and advocate for the protection of every inch of land and water around them, promoting harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. With the development of tourism resources in Lugu Lake, Mosuo culture is gradually disappearing. Many tourists have only a superficial understanding of Mosuo culture and have some misconceptions about local customs. To showcase authentic Mosuo culture and its history to the outside world, Erqing and Ciren Duoji began collecting items used by the Mosuo people in their daily lives and taking photos of their daily activities since 1998. They actively collected items that are about to disappear from folk culture to establish the Mosuo Folk Museum based on a simple exhibition room, aiming to pass on Mosuo culture. In the museum, visitors can ask questions freely and gain a comprehensive understanding of the history, culture, and customs of the Mosuo people. The recommended visiting time is 1-2 hours.
