Labrang Monastery, located in Xiahe County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province, is fully named in Tibetan as: "Gadan Xiazhu Darji Zaxi Yisuqi Julang", which means the auspicious right-turning temple of joyful teachings. It is commonly referred to as Zaxiqi Temple, generally known as Labrang Monastery. The name Labrang is a variation of the Tibetan word "Lazhang", meaning the residence of a living Buddha master. At its peak, the monastery housed over 4,000 monks and opened to the public in 1980. The monastery is oriented north to south, covering a total area of about 860,000 square meters, with a building area of over 400,000 square meters, including more than 90 main halls, six colleges, 16 Buddha halls, 18 Angqian (great living Buddha residences), monk quarters, teaching platforms, Dharma gardens, printing houses, stupas, etc., forming a magnificent architectural complex with Tibetan characteristics, with no less than ten thousand rooms. The architecture of Labrang Monastery is rugged and generous, ancient and elegant, sturdy and durable, showcasing the unique style of the Tibetan people. Labrang Monastery is one of the six major monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism and is acclaimed as the "World Tibetan Academy". The number of tourists visiting here is increasing day by day, as one can not only appreciate the Tibetan-style temple architecture and experience the rich religious atmosphere but also taste the unique Labrang Tibetan cuisine.
