Shanghai Pudong International Airport, located in the Pudong New Area of Shanghai, is about 30 kilometers from downtown Shanghai. It is one of China's three major gateway composite hubs and the largest hub airport in East China. The airport was completed in 1999; the second runway was officially opened in 2005; the second terminal and the third runway were officially opened for operation in 2008; and the fourth runway was officially opened in 2015. Pudong Airport has two terminals and three cargo areas, covering a total area of 824,000 square meters. In 2019, Pudong Airport had an annual passenger throughput of 76.1534 million and an annual cargo and mail throughput of 3.6356 million tons. Currently, 110 airlines operate regular flights to Shanghai's two major airports, connecting Pudong Airport to 297 destinations in 47 countries and regions worldwide. Currently, it is the third busiest airport in China and the nineteenth busiest in the world.
