Nanjing is located in the eastern part of China, at the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, near the river and the sea. It is abbreviated as "Ning" and was historically known as Jinling and Jiankang. It is the capital of Jiangsu Province. As of 2018, the city has 11 districts, covering a total area of 6,587 square kilometers, with an urban area of 971.62 square kilometers. The resident population is 8.4362 million, with an urban population of 6.9599 million, resulting in an urbanization rate of 82.5%. Nanjing is one of the first national historical and cultural cities and an important birthplace of Chinese civilization. It has long been the political, economic, and cultural center of southern China, historically serving as a protector of the legitimacy of the Huaxia civilization multiple times, holding a special status and value in Chinese history. Human activities in Nanjing date back to 1 to 1.2 million years ago, with the Nanjing ape living in Tangshan 350,000 to 600,000 years ago. It has a civilization history of over 7,000 years, a city-building history of nearly 2,600 years, and a capital history of nearly 500 years, earning it the titles of "Six Ancient Capitals" and "Ten Dynasties' Metropolis."
