Jade Buddha Temple is located on Anyuan Road in the Putuo District of Shanghai. It is named after the Jade Buddha that is primarily enshrined in the temple. As it belongs to the Linji school of Zen Buddhism and practices Zen teachings, it is also known as Jade Buddha Zen Temple. Although it is situated in a bustling urban area, it offers tranquility amidst the noise, likened to a pure land in the city. The original Jade Buddha Temple was established in the 26th year of the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty (1900) next to the Wusong River Bay Station. The temple is designed in a Song Dynasty architectural style, with a rigorous layout, covering an area of approximately 11.6 acres and a building area of 8,856 square meters. Along the central axis of the temple are the Heavenly King Hall, the Mahavira Hall, and the Jade Buddha Pavilion (Abbot's Room), with the sides featuring the Reclining Buddha Hall, Guanyin Hall, Bronze Buddha Hall, and Dining Hall, arranged in a harmonious manner. The courtyard is filled with the fragrance of incense and the glow of auspicious candles, creating a unique charm. As an important window for Shanghai's friendly exchanges with the outside world, Jade Buddha Temple has become one of the must-visit attractions for many domestic and international tourists.
