Pu'er City, also known as Simao, is a prefecture-level city in Yunnan Province, located in the southwestern part of Yunnan. It governs 1 district and 9 counties, with a population of 2.617 million at the end of 2016 and a total area of 45,385 square kilometers. On January 21, 2007, Simao City was renamed Pu'er City. Pu'er has 9 autonomous counties for ethnic minorities, inhabited by 14 ethnic groups including Han, Hani, Yi, Lahu, Wa, and Dai, with ethnic minorities accounting for 61% of the population. Local traditional ethnic festivals in Pu'er include the Wa Ethnic Wooden Drum Festival, Lahu Ethnic Gourd Festival, Yi Ethnic Torch Festival, and Dai Ethnic Water-Splashing Festival. The region of Pu'er is rich in historical sites and scenic spots. The local customs and traditions are diverse and colorful, and it has produced a number of famous figures. There are many rare animals and unique flowers and trees. The local specialty products are distinctive, and the transportation for tourism is convenient.
