Information

Napa Lake Nature Reserve is located in the northwest of Shangri-La County, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan, about 8 kilometers from the county seat. Established in 1984, it covers an area of 31 square kilometers, with an elevation of 3266 meters and a lake area of 660 square kilometers. This area is a wetland ecological type reserve, mainly protecting plateau seasonal lakes and marsh meadows, serving as a winter habitat for migratory birds such as the black-necked crane. It is the largest grassland in Zhongdian County and one of the most picturesque areas with plateau characteristics. Due to the careful protection by the Tibetan people, many birds visit here every autumn, such as black-necked cranes, yellow ducks, and bar-headed geese, flying high and low over the grassland, creating a delightful scene. In late summer and early autumn, there is frequent rainfall, increasing the lake surface area, which decreases from late autumn to the following summer and autumn. In October, as the autumn winds rise, flocks of black-necked cranes, bar-headed geese, white cranes, yellow ducks, and spot-billed ducks arrive as expected, foraging and playing in the marshes by the lake. During the winter and spring seasons, the surface area of Napa Lake shrinks, transforming into vast marsh meadows—Yila Grassland, which is the largest spring pasture in Yunnan. Here, you can rent bicycles or electric vehicles from nearby rental shops to cycle around Napa Lake, which can be completed in an afternoon.
