Yuelu Academy is one of the four most famous academies in Chinese history, located at the foot of Yuelu Mountain on the west bank of the Xiangjiang River in Changsha, Hunan, a city renowned for its historical and cultural significance. It was founded in the ninth year of the Kaibao era of the Northern Song Dynasty (976 AD), and has a history of over 1000 years, with continuous scholarly activities and a rich academic lineage. As one of the oldest educational institutions in the world, its ancient traditional academy architecture has been well preserved to this day. Every courtyard, every stone tablet, every brick and tile, and every breeze carries the cultural spirit refined by time. Yuelu Academy covers an area of 25,000 square meters, consisting of the main academy, an attached Confucian temple, and the newly built Chinese Academy Museum. Most of the existing buildings are relics from the Ming and Qing dynasties, and the layout of the ancient architecture adopts a central axis symmetry with progressively layered courtyards. This not only creates a solemn, mysterious, and distant sense of depth and visual effect but also reflects the Confucian cultural values of hierarchical order, distinct social classes, and clear distinctions between primary and secondary relationships. Yuelu Academy is the largest and best-preserved academy architectural complex in China. Visiting the academy is suitable in all seasons, with the best time to enjoy the autumn leaves on Yuelu Mountain being from late November to early December each year. A recommended visiting time is around 2-3 hours.
