Qinghai province has a total area of 720,000 square kilometers with the population of 6.07 million. Named after Qinghai Lake, the largest lake in China, Qinghai is one of the least populated provinces in China, giving it an isolated, wilder feel that is so uncharacteristic of the rest of China.

Historically, it is a part of ancient Tibet, the boundaries of Qinghai today roughly match those of the ancient Tibetan province of Amdo. Tibetan cultural influence is still palpable throughout the province.

Qinghai’s charm lies in its dazzling glaciers and numerous rivers and lakes. Known as ‘China’s Water Tower’, Qinghai is the source of the Yangtze River, Yellow River and Lancang River. Qinghai has the world’s largest alpine wetland, alpine grassland, shrub grove and forest.
