Hainan, abbreviated as "Qiong", has its capital in Haikou and is located in the southern part of China. To the north, it is bordered by the Qiongzhou Strait with Guangdong, to the west it faces the Beibu Gulf opposite Guangxi and Vietnam, to the east it overlooks the South China Sea and Taiwan, and to the southeast and south, it neighbors the Philippines, Brunei, and Malaysia across the South China Sea. Hainan Province, which includes Hainan Island, has a total area of about 33,900 square kilometers and a permanent population of 9.44 million. During the Qin Dynasty, Hainan Island was part of Xiang County; in the Tang Dynasty, it was changed from a county to a state; in the Ming Dynasty, Hainan established Qiongzhou Prefecture, and the administrative structure continued in the Qing Dynasty; in 1949, Hainan Special Administrative Region was established under the Executive Yuan. The Hainan Special Administrative Region Chief Executive's Office and the Hainan Provincial Preparatory Committee are located in Haikou; in 1988, the Hainan Economic Special Zone was established. The administrative area of Hainan Province includes Hainan Island and the islands and reefs of the Xisha Islands, Nansha Islands, and Zhongsha Islands, along with their maritime areas. Notable tourist attractions here include the Xinglong Overseas Chinese National Forest Park, Tianya Haijiao Scenic Area, Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone, and Tongguling National Nature Reserve, among others.
