Heilongjiang Province, abbreviated as "Hei", is a provincial-level administrative region of the People's Republic of China, with Harbin as its capital. Heilongjiang Province is located in the northeastern part of China, bordered by Russia to the north and east across the river, adjacent to Inner Mongolia to the west, and bordering Jilin Province to the south. It is the northernmost and easternmost provincial-level administrative region in China, covering a total area of 473,000 square kilometers, ranking 6th in the country. The border line is 2,981.26 kilometers long. As of 2020, Heilongjiang Province has 12 prefecture-level cities, 1 region, a total of 54 urban districts, 21 county-level cities, 45 counties, and 1 autonomous county, with a permanent population of 37.513 million. The geographical features of Heilongjiang Province are characterized by "five mountains, one water, one grass, and three parts of farmland". The terrain is generally high in the northwest, north, and southeast, consisting of mountains, plateaus, plains, and water surfaces in the northeast and southwest; it spans four major river systems: the Heilongjiang, Ussuri River, Songhua River, and Suifen River, and belongs to the cold temperate and temperate continental monsoon climate. Heilongjiang Province is located in the hinterland of Northeast Asia and is an important land route to Russia and the European continent from Asia and the Pacific region, serving as an important window for China's border opening.
