The terrain is flat, with a network of rivers crisscrossing the area. As of 2018, it has a total area of 14,335 square kilometers and a population of 16.33 million. It is the capital of Sichuan Province, a megacity, and the core city of the Chengdu metropolitan area. It is an important central city in the western region of China, as approved by the State Council, serving as a commercial logistics center and a comprehensive transportation hub. It is also the birthplace of the ancient Shu civilization and has been the administrative center for various dynasties. During the Tang Dynasty, it was one of the most developed industrial and commercial cities in China. In 1949, the People's Liberation Army entered Chengdu, making it the seat of the Sichuan West Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. It is also an excellent tourist city, home to famous historical sites such as the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, Wuhou Shrine, Du Fu Thatched Cottage, and the Jinsha Site.
