Daxu Ancient Town

Daxu Ancient Town is located on the east bank of the Li River, southeast of Father and Son Rock, north of Mopanshan, and is 23 kilometers away from Guilin by water. The administrative area covers 193.78 square kilometers, with a total population of 51,600. Daxu Ancient Town is one of the "Four Great Market Towns" of ancient Guangxi. Daxu Ancient Town was established in the year 200. The old Daxu Street stretches 2 kilometers along the Li River, with narrow streets paved with bluestone slabs, and well-preserved old houses on both sides of the stone road. Daxu Ancient Town was formerly known as Chang'an City and Lutian City, commonly referred to as Daxu. A small settlement had formed during the Han Dynasty, and by the Northern Song Dynasty, it had become a prosperous commercial town, recognized as one of the four ancient towns of Guangxi during the Ming Dynasty. Its commercial activities began to flourish in the Song Dynasty, with tax officials established; it thrived again in the Ming Dynasty, and in the 31st year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty, the "Lingui County Chronicle" referred to it as a "water and land wharf." During the Anti-Japanese War, it was known as "Little Guilin," with the number of market-goers exceeding 10,000 and the number of moored boats reaching two to three hundred, showcasing a rich local commercial culture and distinct characteristics.
