Shigatse, a prefecture-level city under the Tibet Autonomous Region, is located in the southwestern border of the People's Republic of China, in the southwestern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It borders the Ali region to the west, Naqu City to the north, Lhasa City and Shannan City to the east, and shares borders with countries such as Nepal, Bhutan, and India. The terrain is relatively high from north to south, with the southern Tibetan Plateau and the Yarlung Tsangpo River basin in between. The area covers 182,000 square kilometers. Within Shigatse, Dingri County is home to the world's highest peak—Mount Everest. Sangzhuzong Fortress and Jiangzi Ancient Fortress were once political and religious centers. There are several famous temples, including Tashilhunpo Monastery, Baiyu Monastery, and Sakya Monastery. It has the Yadong Port, Zhangmu Port, and Gyirong Port. The six famous valleys on the southern slope of the Himalayas in Shigatse are known as the "Little Jiangnan of Tibet" or "Jiangnan of Tibet": Yadong Valley, Chentang Valley, Gama Valley, Rongxar Valley, Zhangmu Valley, and Gyirong Valley.
