Jiayuguan City is a prefecture-level city in the northwest of Gansu Province. It is bordered by the Qilian Mountains to the south, the Mazong Mountains to the north, the Jiuquan Basin to the east, and the flat Gobi Desert to the west, located at the narrowest part of the western corridor. The urban area covers 2,935 square kilometers, and as of 2018, the population was 231,853. It is most famous for the Jiayuguan Great Wall located nearby—the largest and most complete Great Wall pass in China. Jiayuguan is not only the first strategic pass at the western end of the Ming Great Wall but also an important transportation hub of the ancient Silk Road. It is known worldwide by titles such as "World Mountain Pass" and "Western End of the Great Wall." The pass was first built in 1372 during the Ming Dynasty and, after 168 years of continuous construction, has become the most spectacular scenery along the Great Wall. In 1961, it was announced by the State Council as one of the first national key cultural relics protection units, and in 1997, it was designated as a national demonstration base for patriotic education.
