Information

Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, also known as Guihua Temple, is located 5 kilometers from Zhongdian County. It is a group of ancient castle-like buildings on the scale of an ancient town. It was built in 1679 (the 11th year of the Tibetan calendar, the year of the Earth Sheep) and completed in 1681 (the year of the Iron Rooster). The Fifth Dalai Lama personally named it "Ganden Sumtseling." This monastery is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan and one of the famous large monasteries in the Kang region. It is also the center of the Yellow Sect in the Sichuan-Yunnan area, holding a significant position throughout the Tibetan region, and is known as the "Little Potala Palace." The monastery is built against the mountain, resembling an ancient castle, showcasing the pinnacle of Tibetan architectural art, and is also referred to as the "Tibetan Art Museum." Similar to the architectural style of Tibetan Buddhism, the two main halls, Zha Cang and Ji Kang, stand tall in the center, surrounded by buildings such as the Eight Great Kangs and monk dormitories, creating a staggered and layered effect that highlights the grandeur of the main structure. Located at a high altitude of over 3300 meters, it may even see a few snowflakes in August, so it is recommended to visit in spring or summer. The recommended visiting time is 2-3 hours.
