The Mu Mansion is the colloquial name for the Lijiang Mu Clan's Tusi government office, located at the foot of Lion Mountain in the ancient city of Lijiang. It is known as the "Grand View Garden" of Lijiang's ancient city culture. When the Naxi people mention "Mu Laoye" (Lord Mu), it feels as intimate as talking about their ancestors. Lord Mu was once the master of this grand residence. To put it simply, five or six hundred years ago, the Mu Mansion was the "Forbidden City" within the ancient city of Lijiang. The entire architectural complex is oriented west to east, showcasing a magnificent architectural art garden. The Naxi people originally did not have Han surnames. After Zhu Yuanzhang established the Ming Dynasty, the Tusi of the Naxi in Lijiang, A Jia A De, assessed the situation and "submitted to allegiance" in 1382, performing the rites of a subject. This act gained Zhu Yuanzhang's favor, who then removed a stroke from his surname and bestowed the Han surname "Mu" upon him. From then on, the traditional Naxi father-son naming system was changed to Han names. The Mu Mansion is a splendid architectural art garden that fully reflects the style and character of Ming Dynasty architecture while retaining the ancient and rugged charm of Tang and Song Dynasty architecture. Its layout, with the main building facing east and a network of jade ditches with flowing water, also embodies the spirit of Naxi traditional culture. There is a saying in Lijiang tourism: "If you haven't been to the Mu Mansion, you haven't been to Lijiang." The recommended visiting time is 2-3 hours.
