The Tuojiang River in Xiangxi is the largest river in Fenghuang County and a first-level tributary of the Wushui River. It has two sources: the northern source is the Wuchao River, which originates in the Heikudu Sand South Mountain Gorge, where the rapids are dangerous and the flow is swift, making travel difficult during rain. The Tuojiang River flows from west to east through the central region of Fenghuang County, passing through nine towns including La'er Mountain, Machong, and Mujiangping. It meets the Wushui River at Hexi in Luxi County and merges into the Yuanjiang River at Wuxi Town. The main stream is 131 kilometers long, with 97 kilometers within Fenghuang County and a drainage area of 732 square kilometers. The Tuojiang River is the mother river of the ancient city of Fenghuang, flowing gently along the city walls and nurturing the children of the ancient city for generations. There are many flat-bottomed boats on the Tuojiang River, all made of wood and coated with locally produced tung oil, giving them a shiny appearance. Riding on a thatched boat, listening to the boatman's shouts, and watching the Tujia stilt houses along the banks that have stood for a hundred years offers a unique charm. The tour of the Tuojiang River is usually combined with a visit to the ancient town of Fenghuang, and it is recommended to spend half a day to a full day.
