Guangxi, officially known as the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, is located in the southern part of China. It borders Guangdong Province to the east, faces the Beibu Gulf to the south with Hainan Province across the sea, shares a border with Yunnan Province to the west, connects with Hunan Province to the northeast, adjoins Guizhou Province to the northwest, and shares a border with the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the southwest. It covers an area of 237,600 square kilometers, and as of the end of 2018, the population was approximately 49 million. Nanning is the capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The city was first established as the capital in 318 AD and has a history of 1,700 years. In 632 AD, it was renamed Yongzhou, and in 1324, it was renamed Nanning Road, meaning 'peace in the southern border,' which is how Nanning got its name. Major scenic spots in Guangxi include: the Greater Guilin landscape cultural leisure resort area centered around Guilin City, the Nanning business exhibition green city cultural tourism area, and the coastal tourism area centered around Beihai Silver Beach. As of 2014, Guangxi has 4 national 5A-level tourist attractions, 112 4A-level tourist attractions, and they are distributed across all 14 prefecture-level cities. The national scenic spots include the Li River in Guilin, Xishan in Guiping, and Huashan in Ningming.
