Information

Pingyao Ancient City is located in the central part of Shanxi Province and has well-preserved the basic appearance of a county town from the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is the most complete ancient city existing in the Han ethnic region of China. It was built during the reign of King Xuan of Zhou between 827 BC and 782 BC, established by the general Yin Jifu of the Western Zhou Dynasty, and has a history of over 2700 years. After being rebuilt in the third year of the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty (1370 AD), it has largely maintained its original layout. The key residential buildings in Pingyao were constructed between 1840 and 1911. The layout of the residential buildings is rigorous, with a clear axis, symmetrical on both sides, distinct between primary and secondary elements, and a fluctuating outline, with a closed appearance and deep courtyards. Exquisite wood carvings, brick carvings, and stone carvings are complemented by vivid local paper-cut window decorations, vividly reflecting the historical and cultural characteristics of the Han people from the 14th to 19th centuries. Some say that Shanxi's past prosperity lies in Pingyao, and the soul of Pingyao is in the ancient city. There are no charming landscapes, no green mountains and clear waters here. But there is a well-preserved ancient city, majestic city walls, traditional residences, and time-honored shops. Strolling through it brings you a different experience. You can choose a half-day or full-day tour, and if possible, it is recommended to stay for one night in an ancient city inn to deeply experience the charm of the ancient city.
