Information

Wangshi Garden is located in the southeastern part of Suzhou, about 120 kilometers from Shanghai. It is a typical residence garden in Suzhou and a representative work of small to medium-sized classical gardens in Jiangnan, China. It was originally built during the Southern Song Dynasty in the Chunxi era (1174 AD) as a residence garden by the Southern Song official Shi Zhengzhi when he retired to Gusu. After many years of changes, Wangshi Garden was officially opened to the public in October 1958. The garden covers an area of just over 8 mu and is a medium-sized residence garden, which can be divided into three main parts: the eastern part is the residential area, the central part is the landscape area, and the western part is the inner garden, or garden within a garden. This layout gives the entire garden a neat and balanced appearance, while the internal divisions create different scenic areas. The plant configuration is also minimal yet exquisite, especially the nearly thousand-year-old cypress tree planted by the garden's first owner, Shi Zhengzhi, which witnesses the long historical changes of Wangshi Garden. With its exquisite gardening techniques, profound cultural heritage, and elegant garden atmosphere, Wangshi Garden undoubtedly represents small to medium-sized classical gardens in Jiangnan and has gained a reputation both domestically and internationally as a "small garden at its finest." It is recommended to explore the garden on foot, with a suggested time of 1-2 hours.
