It is not only the political center of China but also the center of culture, science, and education, as well as an important transportation hub. Beijing has been the capital for over 800 years. The city has many famous historical sites, including the largest and best-preserved ancient architectural complex in the world—the Forbidden City (also known as the Palace Museum); the Temple of Heaven, where the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties held solemn harvest ceremonies.
